How do I get my business into Google AI Overviews, and fix what they say?
Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no separate sign-up. To fix a wrong Overview, you can’t edit it: send feedback, then correct what it was built from, your Business Profile, your website and the pages it cites.

What Google says
To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. In Google’s words: “There are no additional technical requirements.” Google also says you don’t need special structured data or new AI text files.
What controls it
- Googlebot being allowed in your robots.txt.
- The page being indexed.
- Snippet controls:
nosnippet,data-nosnippet,max-snippetandnoindex.
What doesn’t control it
- Google-Extended, which covers Gemini training and grounding, not Search inclusion. See Should I block AI crawlers like GPTBot?
- llms.txt: Google says its AI features don’t need it. See What is an llms.txt file?
What helps a page get picked
- The answer in the first lines.
- Facts as text, not only in images.
- Structured data that matches the visible page.
- Being the page that ranks for the question.
When an AI Overview contradicts your website
- Report it with the feedback option under the Overview, and say what’s wrong.
- Open the cited links. Fix your Google Business Profile first, then your site’s text and structured data, then ask third-party pages to update.
- Ask Google to recrawl: in Search Console, use URL Inspection, then Request indexing.
- Search again after a few days.
An honest note
Preferly doesn’t check Google AI Overviews or AI Mode yet. Our check asks 10 AI models through their APIs, including Gemini, and the fixes it suggests to your site and listings are the same ones that feed AI Overviews. The free crawler check tells you whether Google-Extended, Google’s AI crawler switch, is allowed in your robots.txt.
Questions
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google says Google-Extended doesn’t affect inclusion in Google Search. AI Overviews are part of Search and follow Googlebot and snippet controls.
How long does an AI Overview take to update?
Google doesn’t say. It changes when its sources and index change, often within days to weeks.
Can I opt my site out of AI Overviews?
Only with snippet controls like nosnippet, which also limit your normal search results. Most businesses shouldn’t.
Does Preferly check AI Overviews?
Not yet. Today we ask 10 AI models through their APIs: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude Opus, Grok, Meta Muse Spark, DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi, NVIDIA Nemotron and GLM. Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot aren’t covered yet, and personal AI agents are coming soon. The methodology lists exactly who we ask.
