Questions
Do I need an llms.txt?
No. It’s optional, and the evidence that it changes AI answers is thin. It’s cheap to add, but letting AI crawlers in and keeping your facts readable as text matter more. What llms.txt is explains it.
Does Google use llms.txt?
Google says its AI features, such as AI Overviews, don’t need any special text files: Google’s guidance on AI features. Some other AI tools and coding assistants read llms.txt.
What goes in it?
Your name as the title, a one-line summary, a short paragraph about what you offer, then sections of links to your key pages with a note on each. Plain text in Markdown; no HTML.
llms.txt or robots.txt?
Different jobs. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may read, and blocking the wrong crawler there keeps you out of AI answers. llms.txt is an optional guide to what’s worth reading. Get robots.txt right first: check it or write the lines.
How do I add it on Wix, Squarespace or WordPress?
It goes at the root of your site, as yoursite.com/llms.txt. Where each builder puts it:
- Wix: Wix creates an llms.txt for some sites (it needs a Premium plan, a connected domain and indexing switched on). Look under SEO & GEO > Tools and settings for llms.txt; if it's there, open it, choose Edit file and add what's missing from the draft. Editing it stops Wix updating it automatically. If you don't see it, it isn't offered for your site yet, and Wix has no other way to publish a file at /llms.txt.
- Squarespace: We couldn't confirm a standard way to publish a file at /llms.txt on Squarespace. If your SEO settings show an llms.txt option, paste the draft there. If not, skip it: llms.txt is optional, and the other fixes in this pack matter more.
- WordPress: Yoast SEO: Yoast SEO > Settings > Site features, turn on llms.txt (it builds the file from your pages, and you can choose which pages it lists). Rank Math: turn on the LLMS Txt module in Rank Math SEO > Dashboard, then edit it under General Settings > Edit llms.txt. Without either plugin, upload the file to your site's main folder with your host's file manager.
