Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?
Usually because your competitor is named on more of the pages ChatGPT reads: directories, “best of” lists, review sites and articles. It can also be that their site states clearly what they do and where, while yours doesn’t, or that AI crawlers can’t reach your site at all. Each cause has a specific fix.

Five common reasons, each with its fix
- They’re on the lists AI cites and you aren’t. Open the sources AI shows for your customer’s question and get listed on them.
- Their site states the service and location plainly. Rewrite your service pages with the answer first.
- AI can’t reach your site. Use the free crawler check.
- Their listings agree with each other and yours conflict. See Why does AI give the wrong hours for my business?
- They have more reviews that name the specific service. Ask real customers; never buy reviews.

Questions
Is the competitor paying AI?
No. AI answers aren’t sold. Ads in ChatGPT, where they appear, are labelled and kept apart from the answer.
Will it change if I fix these?
Answers vary run to run and take time to reflect new sources. Fix the biggest gap first and check again in a month.
Can I get a competitor removed?
No. Focus on being named, and on correcting anything where AI contradicts your website.
